Breaking News: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82
LONDON, UK — Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. The late president died on Sunday at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical care.
The news was confirmed in an official statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, via his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen,” Shehu wrote.
Prior to his death, reports of Buhari’s declining health had circulated, prompting concerns. However, his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, had recently confirmed he was receiving medical attention while downplaying rumors that his condition was critical.
Born on December 17, 1942, Buhari was a retired Major General who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, before returning to power as a democratically elected president in 2015. He became the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria’s history, unseating then-President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Buhari contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party formed through a historic merger of four major political groups: the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which Buhari had previously led.
In 2019, he was re-elected for a second term after defeating PDP’s Atiku Abubakar in a closely watched national election.
Muhammadu Buhari leaves behind a legacy marked by efforts to combat corruption, strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, and reform the economy — though his administration was also frequently criticized for its handling of human rights, economic challenges, and insecurity.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
